where to buy conflict free engagement rings

As the saying goes, ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’. As diamonds last forever and are impossible to break, they are a perfect representation of your marriage. Choosing the perfect engagement ring can be a tough process and it is made even more difficult when environmental concerns and human rights factor into it. The mining of precious metals is damaging our earth and the harvesting of diamonds has a long history of causing conflict along with inadequate wages and non-existent health and safety regulations for workers. This was brought to light in the 2006 movie Blood Diamond, and although things are improving in the industry, there are still civil wars being funded by the diamond trade.

Finding a conflict free engagement ring is the right thing to do for socially conscious brides to avoid having a slight feeling of guilt every time you or your partner look at your ring finger.

What Does Conflict Free Mean?

When diamonds are classed as conflict free, it means that they are certified as coming from mines that are not kept under cruel conditions, and the sales of diamonds have not been used to fund wars.

How to Know if a Ring is Conflict Free

  • Purchase from a reputable company that has a Kimberley Process Certification.
  • Check that the company offers a guarantee that they sell 100% conflict free diamonds and gems.

Kimberly Process Certification

The Kimberley Process Certification was introduced at the start of this century with a goal of being able to identify and trace each and every diamond, to guarantee peaceful mining conditions. While this process is great for monitoring the diamond trade, it is only a voluntary program and corruption and smuggling of diamonds still exists.

I’ve never heard of ‘conflict-free diamonds, but I appreciate it! Actually, if I were getting married again today, I would skip diamonds altogether and probably just have engraved bands! But, this was before I knew about conflict bands. Really awesome! I’m wondering if ‘conflict free’ diamonds rings are more expensive?

Hi Jackie, some conflict-free diamonds are more expensive, such as diamonds from Canada.

I have heard that diamonds are goes through a lot of unethical trades so I never really trusted any diamonds, because you simply never know if they are smuggled.

However, the Kimberley process certification changes this. I didn’t know that diamonds can be certified for being conflict free too. In a sense, it is kind of like a birth certificate so you can figure out where your diamonds came from.

Personally, they are a little high priced for me, so maybe moissanite is a more viable option because they look just as beautiful. I have friends who likes the real stuff though, so they would probably just the genuine diamonds. They also purchased on amazon before.

When their package came, the diamond earrings went missing. It is a good thing Amazon refunded it back to them. Like you said, Amazon’s refund policy is simply amazing.

By the way, other than conflict free, how else do you classify diamonds as higher or lower quality?

Hi Win, there are a few factors that go into diamond quality and grading, they are known as the 4 C’s: Cut, Clarity, Carat, and Color. There are some great resources on the web for learning about the 4 C’s, it would be too much for me to write about here 🙂
